An area resident by the name of Linda Nishioka did just that and her letter was published in the June 24, 2011, edition of the Olney Gazette.
Linda expressed her displeasure with the ICC's destruction of wooded areas. She suggested that much of the occupied land bordering the ICC route be reclaimed and used for recreational purposes like soccer fields (and pedestrian facilities, might I add).
Linda is onto something here! Imagine these soccer fields and other recreational facilities being connected by bike paths along the entire route to encourage physical activity and non-motorized travel. What do you think?
Part of me wonders if the State would prefer us to drive instead of walk or bike, therby forcing us to pay the ever-increasing highway tolls, which would certainly help the State amortize the $2.5 billion worth of construction and maintenance costs associated with the ICC.
Here's the letter below after the jump:
Put soccer fields along ICC
Yes, we need more soccer fields, so why not put them where the Intercounty Connector has already destroyed our native lands and chopped up neighborhoods?Where there are huge construction offices, equipment storage and staging sites along the ICC route, why not put in local, neighborhood soccer fields?
The ICC has taken so much parkland and compromised even more. Doesn't it make sense to ask for something back that would enhance local recreation? Why not reclaim these areas for soccer when the ICC is completed?
Linda Nishioka,
Kensington
