Welcome to Norbeck Road's blog

Norbeck Road:  Curvy, narrow, and congested
This blog is intended to bring attention to the safety problems on Norbeck Road (MD-28) between Georgia Ave (MD-97) and Layhill Road (MD-182) in Silver Spring, Maryland, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists.

With the Intercounty Connector (ICC) nearing completion, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will need to upgrade Norbeck Road (MD-28/MD-198) to handle not only the increased volume of vehicle traffic, but also pedestrians and bicyclists who will be gravitating to the new ICC bike-path.
Since pedestrians and bicyclists are our most vulnerable road users, they need to be protected at all costs, more so when you consider that children, teenagers, and some young adults, elderly adults, and persons with disabilities constitute a large proportion of non-motorized travel.

In fact, the availability of a pedestrian-bike path on Norbeck Road would be a win-win for everyone. Providing non-motorized options would allow residents to walk and bike to their destinations instead of having to drive. That would improve their fitness, help the environment, and reduce gas consumption, traffic congestion, and accidents.  In return, the road would not have to be repaired as frequently, resulting in lower maintenance costs for SHA.

A pedestrian-bike path on Norbeck Road is a no-brainer. Let's work with SHA to make Norbeck Road safer and more accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists. That's the goal of this campaign!
